Aboriginal Peoples Television Network (APTN)

APTN initially went on the air in early 1999 out of Yellowknife NWT, then out of Winnipeg, MB in November of 1999. The studios overlook downtown Winnipeg located on Portage Avenue. Cancom is the signal content delivery agent which distributes its signal to Bell Express Vu, Star Choice & cable companies across Canada. A total of 96 transmitters located in the North, allow the broadcasting of APTN across most of Northern Canada.

With the recent improvements to the Production Control room facilities at their Winnipeg studio, the Wheatstone’s D9 TV Audio Console was an excellent addition to the upgrade. It also introduced APTN to the digital audio realm. The console is used for the station’s two daily newscasts as well as a live call in show.

Fernand Dubois, Director of Engineering assigned the task of procuring a console to Jerry Radford, a Broadcast Technologist for APTN. After comparing the different manufacturers of consoles on the market, Jerry selected the Wheatstone D9 Television Audio Console for a number of reasons:

  • The console is very user friendly
  • It controls much like that of the legacy analog audio consoles
  • You can institute changes on the fly, excellent for live productions
  • Reconfiguring the console for different shows via presets can be done quickly at the push  of a button
  • In appearance, it’s looks and operates like a normal audio console, but has the power and flexibility of a router
  • It has discrete 5.1 mixing capabilities for future 5.1
  • Ease of installation using multi pair cabling to and from the appropriate cages along with CAT 5 cabling to and from the console surface itself
  • Great for a temporary location, took only an hour to transfer the board to its now permanent location and re-connect
  • More I/O options for greater flexiblity
  • Great support from Wheatstone, the manufacturer.

The remainder of the engineering crew is Jason Shymanski and Terry Kenny; Vincent Proteau is the audio engineer.
